The spiral, as a symbol of dynamics and life, has firmly entered as a motif in modern construction. The spiral is DNA, life, infinity, eternal movement, it is no coincidence that this fascinating form attracts skyscraper architects so much. Let's look at them.

Tower Torso in Malmö, Sweden.

The first example of a high-rise spiral building was the Tower Torso in Malmö, a revolutionary project by Santiago Calatrava, completed in 2005. The 190-metre-high tower consists of nine prismatic blocks, each of which is rotated relative to the other. The prototype of the shape was a rotating human torso. The strength of the tower's structure is ensured by a supporting frame, which is located not only inside but also outside. The outer one has a steel base, the inner one is made of reinforced concrete.

Mode Gakuen Spiral Tower in Nagoya, Japan.

The 170-meter-high tower was built in 2008. The authors of the project, the Japanese bureau Nikken Sekkei, created a structure that has an internal rod. This support consists of steel columns filled with concrete, supported by three cone-shaped wings. The tower's design uses seismic-resistant technologies that can withstand 9-point earthquakes.

Al Tijaria Tower in Kuwait.

The skyscraper was built according to the design of the NORR Limited and Al Jazera Consultants bureau in 2009. From the ground level to the top floor, the tower makes an 80-degree turn. The floor slabs of the cylindrical volume on each floor are shifted clockwise - thus creating the effect of a gradual smooth twisting of the building's massif.

The F&F Tower in Panama City, Panama.

The first spiral tower in Latin America, built in 2011. The project was developed by Panamanian architects from Pinzón Lozano & Asociados. The rotation from the base to the spire of the 242-meter-high tower is 360 degrees. The skyscraper’s design is based on the principle of geometric rotation of a prism. Mirror tile cladding completes the futuristic appearance of the building.

Absolute World Towers in Ontario, Canada.

Two paired towers, 161 and 179 meters high, were built in 2012 according to the design of the architectural bureau MAD Architects. Popular rumor gave them the name - Marilyn Monroe. The shape of the towers is a very soft, plastic spiral, the buildings have no corners. A good view from any point of the building is achieved due to the gradual rotation of the levels by 209 degrees from the base to the top of the building. There is not a single floor similar to each other in the towers.

Cayan Tower in Dubai, UAE.

The authors of the 307-meter tower project, the architectural bureau Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, started from the idea of slightly distorting cylindrical forms. The walls of the tower from the base to the roof are twisted by 90 degrees, each floor is turned relative to the previous one by 1.2 degrees. All communications in the building are laid in the central rod. The project was completed in 2013.

Evolution Tower in Moscow, Russia.

The tower, which is part of the Moscow-City complex, was built in 2015. The 246-meter-high skyscraper is most reminiscent of a DNA molecule in shape, made of monolithic reinforced concrete on glass. The planes of the facades twist around the axis of symmetry by 156 degrees, that is, each of the skyscraper's floors is rotated relative to the previous one by 3 degrees.

Shanghai Tower in Pudong, Shanghai, China.

The 632-meter-tall spiral tower was built in 2015. It is part of a complex of three high-rises. The skyscraper's appearance is very elegant, despite its height. The tower's design is a core of nine cylindrical buildings placed on top of each other. Each of the nine buildings has an atrium. The skyscraper's design was developed by the American bureau Gensler.

United Tower in Manama, Bahrain.

The unusual 200-meter skyscraper is located on an artificial island in the Gulf of Bahrain. The project was developed by the architectural bureau Ahmed Al Qaed Construction and Cooperation Investment House. The skyscraper was built in 2017. The spiral of the huge, drill-like high-rise twists counterclockwise, providing a 360-degree view of the bay.

Generali Tower in Milan, Italy.

This tower is a project of the architectural bureau Zaha Hadid Architects. It was built in 2018 as part of the large-scale CityLife project. The height of the tower is 191 meters. It is popularly called o Storto, which translates as "twisted". It is one of the world's famous energy-efficient buildings that has the LEED standard.

Diamond Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

One of the most spectacular buildings in the world - as if two snakes are wrapped around the axial vertical rod. At the top of the skyscraper there is a huge "diamond". The construction of the 432-meter tower was completed in 2020.

The theme of "twisting" is still popular today.
