Stockholm Wood City: A New Direction for Sustainable Architecture from Sweden

In a time of rapidly changing climate and growing demand for eco-friendly solutions, the construction industry is facing a new-scale challenge — to create cities that not only minimize environmental harm but also promote human well-being. One of the most impressive responses to this challenge is the Stockholm Wood City project in Sweden — the world’s largest initiative for building an urban district primarily out of wood.

250,000 m² of Sustainable Future

The project, launched by Swedish developer Atrium Ljungberg, is being implemented in the Sickla district in the south-central part of Stockholm. The total development area exceeds 250,000 square meters, making it the largest wooden urban construction project in the world.

By 2027, the area will include:

  • 7,000 office spaces,
  • 2,000 residential units,
  • as well as restaurants, shops, and social infrastructure.

Construction began in 2024, and the first buildings are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Why Wood?

The choice of wood as the main construction material is not accidental. This material not only reduces the carbon footprint and allows for CO₂ storage within building structures, but also has a direct impact on human health:

  • it improves indoor air quality,
  • helps reduce stress levels,
  • enhances concentration and productivity,
  • and creates a naturally warm atmosphere in the interior.

In addition, wooden construction generates less noise, requires fewer heavy machines, and eases the logistical burden on urban environments.
